Crocus L'Atelier comes from Cahors in south-west France, a region with a long history of producing Malbec. The wine is the result of a partnership between internationally renowned winemaker Paul Hobbs and Bertrand Gabriel Vigouroux, whose family has been making wine in Cahors for generations.
The grapes are selected primarily from vineyards on the third and fourth terraces of the Lot Valley. These sites contain a mixture of clay, gravel, sand and limestone-influenced soils, offering different expressions of Malbec. The vineyard selection helps combine generous fruit with freshness, structure and the subtle earthiness associated with Cahors.
The wine is made entirely from Malbec, with fermentation in stainless-steel tanks and careful management of contact between the juice and grape skins. This develops colour, flavour and tannin while preserving the wine's fruit character.
Unlike many oak-matured Malbecs, L'Atelier is aged without barrels. Its complexity comes from the character of the grapes and their growing environment rather than added oak flavours. The result is a fruit-expressive yet structured Cahors, combining the region's traditional identity with an approachable, modern style.
L'Atelier is a natural partner for grilled beef, roast lamb and hearty casseroles. Its fresh acidity and defined tannins are particularly well suited to richly flavoured meat dishes, while its savoury character complements mushrooms, lentils and rustic French cooking.
For a regional pairing, try it with daube de boeuf, a slow-cooked French beef stew. The wine's dark fruit and freshness provide an appealing contrast to the dish's rich, savoury flavours.
