Aromas of dark, macerated fruits, coffee, toffee apple and spices lead to an abundant, velvelty palate showing raisins, dark chocolate and christmas pudding. The finish is as long as it gets and leaves your mouth with lingering flavours of cocoa, juicy ripe fruits and raisins.
About
One of, if not the greatest of 'new' wineries in Spain, Finca Villacreces is situated right in the heart of the Ribera del Duero's Golden Mile and was founded by Izadi, the iconic Rioja house, in the vineyards adjacent to the legendary Vega Sicilia. Indeed, a chunk of the vines used to be part of Vega Sicilia until they were aquired by Finca Villacreces, but that's a whole story in itself!
Pruno is the winery's 'entry-level' wine and was described by Robert Parker as, 'The best Spanish wine in history for under $20'. The best comparison we can find is akin to an entry-level Rolls Royce. It is simply superb and quite probably the best red wine we have at this price point.
Grapes for 'Pruno' are only taken from Finca Villacreces’ own vineyards, from their slightly younger vines. The ratio of grapes used for the wine is 90% Tempranillo and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Each grape type is fermented separately in small stainless-steel tanks. The two varieties are then aged separately in second and third-year French oak barrels for 12 months prior to the final blending and the wine bottled.

This wine is heavenly with slowly roasted leg of lamb with garlic and herbs. Cheese works really too as do rare steaks and Serrano ham (Pata Negra)/ salted, cold meats.
