Very clean with a refreshing finish, it is Italian wine at its best. Barbera is a native Italian variety with markedly different characteristics to its French neighbours.
Closest in weight and colour to a Pinot Noir or Gamay, though typically with more tannins and enhanced acidity, making it a great food partner.

About

Barbera is the third most widely planted variety in Northern Italy after Sangiovese and Montepulciano. It is quite a prolific variety, rather like Merlot, and responds well to pruning, which improves the concentration and quality of fruit.

Riva Leone Barbera enjoys DOC status (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), one of Italy's quality kitemarks, which requires that a wine satisfies a defined quality standard and be produced within the specified region, with stringent rules regarding permitted grape varieties, harvest yields, minimum ageing, use of barrels, minimum alcohol content, etc.
