About

Made from the Nebbiolo grape, Barolo is one of Italy's top wines along with Amarone and Brunello di Montalcino. It now enjoys Italy's top classification 'DOCG' (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita). This is a government controlled system to guarantee the quality of a wine. Unlike any other system, a wine cannot use the classification until the wine has been tasted and analysed by a government appointed agent. Individually numbered neck tags are then issued for the winery to put around or across the neck when the wine is bottled. As with all great wines, Barolo was recognised long ago as being amongst the best, even though up until the middle of the 19th century, it was actually a sweet wine.

Barolos needs time to develop and mature. Lots of time. Young Barolos can be tight, tannic and very closed, though today, wineries are making wines that are more accessible young and do not need the time in the cellar that the older vintages benefit from. 1949 was a good vintage throughout Italy and this Barolo is in tip-top condition.

Our Views

A treat for any lover of the traditional great Italian wines. We have tried numerous vintage Barolos, going back to the 1950's and 1960's and found them a real pleasure - some with a freshness and vibrancy that you would associate with a much younger wine. This grape variety seems capable of evolving better than almost any other.
