About
Pommard wine is produced in the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. The Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) Pommard was awarded in 1937 and it is only used for red wine with Pinot noir as the principal grape variety. Whilst there are no 'Grand Cru' vineyards within Pommard, there are numerous highly regarded Premier Cru vineyards with 27 parcels of land/small areas (known in French as 'Lieu Dits' or 'Climats') with Premier Cru status.
Pierre Ponnelle was one of the great figures of Burgundy in the 19th century. Born in 1847, he spent the start of his youth in Beaune and later did his studies in Germany and the Scandinavian countries. Above all, he was passionate about oenology. It was upon his return to Beaune in 1875, that Pierre Ponnelle founded his house as wine merchant. He is considered a pioneer in oenology and a great entrepreneur for his great contributions to the development of Burgundy wines. He was constantly searching for a way to showcase and bring out the finesse and elegance of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of Burgundy.
