Tasting Notes
A warm and spicy red with blackberries, cherries and damsons on a medium-full bodied palate.
About
The iconic variety of Southern Australia and the Barossa, Shiraz does as well as it does because of the very hot climate here, which is similar to the Rhône valley. Irrigation is another key to success in this arid landscape as this creates more easily controlled conditions to grow the optimum fruit. It is one of the reasons Aussie Shiraz tends to be consistent from one vintage to the next.
Shiraz is also know as Syrah in France and other countries in the Northern Hemisphere, though the name is also being adopted in other regions, probably for snob value. That said, this is one of the oldest varietes and is the variety used in the most expensive wines in the world, Hermitage, with record prices exceeding £20,000 per bottle!
Ideal with...
This is an easy wine to enjoy on its own as the tannins and fruit are so well intergrated. It's also a good match for everday pasta dishes, chorizo, bbq, prawns pil pil and dark chocolate.
