Sierra Cantabria is a Rioja producer where the vineyard really does feel like the starting point. Based in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, the winery has grown from generations of family winegrowing and a belief that the character of the grapes and their origins should remain visible in the finished wine.
That doesn't mean every Sierra Cantabria wine tastes alike. Quite the opposite. One of the things we particularly like about the producer is how clearly differentiated the wines can be while retaining a reassuring sense of quality throughout the range.

Sierra Cantabria is the original winery at the heart of the Eguren family's wider winemaking story. The family has been involved with vineyards since the nineteenth century, while Bodegas Sierra Cantabria itself was founded in San Vicente de la Sonsierra in 1957.
The philosophy behind it is remarkably straightforward: great wine begins in the vineyard.
That makes Sierra Cantabria interesting because grape variety, vineyard and place aren't simply technical details added to the story afterwards. They help determine what the wine is trying to express from the beginning.
The producer works principally with vineyards around San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Labastida and Laguardia, an area sheltered by the Sierra de Cantabria and particularly well suited to growing grapes. Tempranillo, Garnacha and Viura are among the varieties grown, alongside less familiar material such as Tempranillo Peludo, with some vineyards more than seventy years old.

The Eguren family describes itself first and foremost as grape growers. That's a useful way of understanding Sierra Cantabria because it puts the emphasis on the raw material rather than beginning with a predetermined style of finished wine.
Generations spent working with vineyards have allowed the family to identify differences between sites, grape varieties and individual plots and to use those differences when deciding what each wine should become.

The Sierra de Cantabria mountain range provides protection from colder, wetter Atlantic weather, while vineyard altitude, exposure and predominantly clay-limestone soils help create conditions in which freshness can be retained alongside ripe fruit and structure.
For Sierra Cantabria, those conditions aren't simply part of the geographical description on the label. They are part of what the winery is trying to preserve in the wines.

Over successive generations, the Eguren family has developed other wine projects built around particular vineyards, places and ideas. Those projects share a wider family philosophy, but they shouldn't all be treated as though they were simply additional Sierra Cantabria wines.
That's an important distinction. Sierra Cantabria has its own identity within the family's work: it is the original winery in San Vicente de la Sonsierra and the foundation from which the family's broader exploration of vineyard and origin developed.
There's a reassuring quality to Sierra Cantabria that we particularly value. Each of the wines we stock feels really well made, but they don't feel as though they've been pushed towards the same result.
The differences between them are clear. That's important to us because you're left with the impression that each wine has been made to showcase its grapes and its Rioja origins rather than simply reproduce a house style.
