Graciano – Rioja's Hidden Gem

Independent advice from Winestore Eccleston to help you discover why Graciano has become one of Rioja's most admired supporting grape varieties.

If you've looked closely at the labels of some of Rioja's finest wines, you may have noticed the name Graciano.

Unlike Tempranillo or Garnacha, Graciano rarely takes centre stage.

Instead, it quietly performs an important supporting role, adding fragrance, freshness and remarkable ageing potential to many of Rioja's most highly regarded wines.

So why do winemakers value it so highly?

And if it's usually only used in small amounts, does it really make that much difference?

The answer is a resounding yes.

This guide explains what Graciano tastes like, why it has become such an important part of premium Rioja and how this fascinating grape helps create some of Spain's most elegant and long-lived wines.

What Does Graciano Taste Like?

Graciano produces wines with a personality all of their own.

Expect vibrant aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants and red cherries, often accompanied by floral notes, gentle spice and hints of liquorice.

Compared with many other red grape varieties, Graciano is naturally fresh, aromatic and beautifully structured.

It also possesses firm acidity and tannins, qualities that allow wines containing Graciano to develop gracefully over many years.

Although Graciano can occasionally be found as a single-varietal wine, its real strength lies in the way it complements other grapes, particularly Tempranillo.

Merchant's Tip
Customers are often surprised to discover how little Graciano is needed to make a noticeable difference. Even a modest proportion can lift a Rioja with extra freshness, fragrance and complexity.

Why Is Graciano Important in Rioja?

If Tempranillo provides Rioja's backbone and Garnacha contributes generous fruit, Graciano often supplies the finishing touches.

Its naturally vibrant acidity helps keep wines fresh as they mature, while its fragrant aromatics add another layer of complexity that becomes increasingly rewarding with age.

That's one of the reasons Graciano is so often found in premium Reservas and Gran Reservas.

It isn't there to dominate the blend.

It's there to enhance it.

Like the final seasoning added by an experienced chef, Graciano helps bring all the other elements together into a more complete and harmonious wine.

Merchant's Tip
If you ever compare an everyday Rioja with a beautifully mature Gran Reserva, Graciano is often one of the reasons the latter feels so vibrant and elegant despite its age.

Does Graciano Taste the Same Everywhere?

Not entirely, although Graciano is much less widely planted than Tempranillo or Garnacha.

The grape originated in northern Spain and remains most closely associated with Rioja, where generations of winemakers have learned how to bring out its unique qualities.

Small plantings can also be found in regions such as Navarra and parts of southern France, while countries including Australia and the United States have experimented with Graciano on a much smaller scale.

Wherever it's grown, Graciano retains its hallmark freshness, fragrant aromatics and excellent ageing potential, but nowhere has it become more closely associated with fine winemaking than Rioja.

Common Myth
Because Graciano is usually found in small proportions, it's easy to assume it isn't very important. In reality, many winemakers regard it as one of the key ingredients that helps premium Rioja remain vibrant, complex and beautifully balanced as it ages.

If You Enjoy These Wines, There's a Good Chance You'll Appreciate Graciano

Unlike Tempranillo or Garnacha, Graciano isn't usually the reason someone buys a bottle.

Instead, it's often the grape they come to appreciate after they've already discovered a love of Rioja.

If you've ever opened a mature Reserva or Gran Reserva and wondered why it still feels so fresh and expressive, Graciano is often part of the answer.

If You Enjoy Elegant, Age-Worthy Wines...

Graciano's freshness and structure make it particularly appealing to those who appreciate wines that develop additional layers of complexity over time.

If You Already Love Rioja...

Learning about Graciano often explains why your favourite Rioja tastes the way it does. It helps reveal that great Rioja isn't built around one grape alone, but around several varieties working together in harmony.

If You Enjoy Wines with Lift and Freshness...

Some red wines rely on richness alone. Graciano brings something different. It contributes energy, fragrance and freshness, helping wines remain lively from the first glass to the last.

Merchant's Tip
We rarely recommend Graciano as somebody's first introduction to Rioja. Instead, it's one of those discoveries that deepens your appreciation once you've already fallen in love with the region. It's often the answer to the question, "Why does this Rioja taste so complete?"

How Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano Work Together

One of the secrets of Rioja's enduring success is that its finest wines rarely rely on a single grape variety.

Instead, each grape contributes something different.

Tempranillo provides the backbone, structure and balance.

Garnacha contributes generous fruit, warmth and approachability.

Graciano adds fragrance, freshness and the ability to age gracefully.

On their own, each grape has its own strengths.

Together, they create wines that are beautifully harmonious, with each variety enhancing the others rather than competing for attention.

The grape provides the personality.

The region shapes how those personalities come together.

That's one of the reasons Rioja has earned such an outstanding reputation around the world.

Where Should You Start with Graciano?

If Graciano has captured your interest, we'd recommend discovering it in the way most wine lovers do – as part of a beautifully made Rioja.

Although a handful of producers make single-varietal Graciano, the grape has earned its reputation by working alongside Tempranillo and Garnacha, adding freshness, fragrance and elegance to wines that become greater than the sum of their parts.

As your appreciation of Rioja grows, you'll naturally begin to notice Graciano appearing on the labels of many premium Reservas and Gran Reservas. Once you know what it contributes, you'll never look at those labels in quite the same way again.
