Why Choose Bodegas Ondarre Wines?

Independent advice from Winestore Eccleston to help you choose your wines with confidence.

There are wineries that become famous through marketing, and there are wineries that quietly earn the respect of the people who drink their wines.

Bodegas Ondarre belongs firmly to the second group.

For many years we've stocked Ondarre because the wines consistently deliver exactly what customers hope to find in traditional Rioja. They're balanced rather than overpowered by oak, generous without becoming heavy, and made with the confidence that comes from understanding both the vineyards and the traditions of one of Spain's greatest wine regions.

If you're discovering Rioja for the first time, or looking for a producer whose wines genuinely reflect the character of the region, Bodegas Ondarre is an excellent place to begin.

The Story Behind Bodegas Ondarre

Every great wine begins with a place, and for Bodegas Ondarre that place is the historic town of Viana. Sitting on Rioja's eastern frontier close to neighbouring Navarra, Viana has been producing wine for centuries. The landscape is shaped by rolling hills, varied soils and an ideal meeting of Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, creating conditions that allow grapes to ripen slowly while retaining freshness and balance.

Founded in 1985, Bodegas Ondarre was created with a clear vision: to produce Rioja that reflects both the vineyards of Viana and the traditions that have made Rioja one of the world's great wine regions.

Rather than chasing fashions or producing wines that rely on excessive extraction or heavy oak, the winery has remained remarkably consistent. Vintage after vintage, the aim has been to produce elegant, food-friendly wines where fruit, oak and structure work together in harmony.

That philosophy is one of the reasons we've continued recommending Ondarre for so many years. The wines don't try to impress with power alone; instead, they reward balance, patience and craftsmanship.

Why Viana Produces Such Elegant Rioja

Location matters enormously in Rioja.

The vineyards surrounding Viana sit at around 500 metres above sea level, where warm sunny days are balanced by cooler nights. This slower ripening allows Tempranillo to develop generous fruit while preserving the freshness that gives the finished wines their elegance.

The area's clay-limestone and stony soils naturally limit vine vigour, encouraging the roots to grow deep in search of moisture and nutrients. Lower yields produce grapes with greater concentration, while many of the older vineyards contribute additional depth and complexity to the finished wines.

These conditions allow Bodegas Ondarre to produce wines that feel generous without becoming heavy, making them particularly enjoyable with food.

Traditional Rioja with Modern Precision

One of the strengths of Bodegas Ondarre is its respect for Rioja's traditional style while embracing modern winemaking techniques where they genuinely improve quality.

Tempranillo remains the heart of the range, supported where appropriate by classic Rioja varieties such as Mazuelo and Garnacha. Careful fruit selection, controlled fermentation and patient oak ageing allow each wine to develop naturally rather than being rushed to market.

American oak contributes the vanilla, sweet spice and gentle coconut notes traditionally associated with Rioja, while French oak adds subtle cedar, refined tannins and additional complexity. The objective is never to let the barrels dominate the fruit, but to create wines where every element feels integrated.

What Makes Bodegas Ondarre Different?

In a region filled with outstanding producers, consistency is one of the qualities we value most.

We've found that Ondarre wines rarely disappoint. Whether someone is buying an approachable everyday Rioja or a mature Reserva for a special meal, the winery delivers a level of balance and reliability that makes recommending the wines easy.

They also represent exceptional value. Rather than paying for a famous name, customers are investing in carefully made wines that consistently over-deliver for their price.

For us, that's one of the defining characteristics of an excellent independent wine recommendation. It's not about finding the most expensive bottle on the shelf. It's about finding the wine that offers the greatest enjoyment for the money.

Why We Continue to Stock Bodegas Ondarre

Independent merchants have the freedom to choose the producers they represent, and every winery on our shelves has earned its place.

Over the years we've tasted countless Riojas, yet Ondarre has remained one of the producers we return to time and again. The wines consistently deliver quality, they offer genuine value and, perhaps most importantly, our customers come back to buy them again.

That repeat custom tells us more than any competition medal ever could. When customers return asking for another bottle of the same wine months or even years later, you know you've found a producer worth keeping.

Our Recommended Starting Point

If you're discovering Bodegas Ondarre for the first time, we'd recommend beginning with Ondarre Rioja Reserva.

It captures everything we admire about the winery: ripe fruit, beautifully judged oak, classic Rioja character and outstanding value. It has also been one of our most recommended Riojas for many years and remains the bottle we suggest most often to customers wanting to experience traditional Rioja at its best.

From there, exploring the rest of the Ondarre range becomes a fascinating journey through one of Spain's most consistently impressive wineries.
